Blog Assignment #5

#1 - Celie begins to stop hating Mr.____. She sees how much he loves Shug and how much Shug loves him. Celie and Mr.___ start to enjoy each other and have conversations about life and other things. Shug starts to want to have a love affair with a young man named Germain, which soon ends and Shug returns home to Georgia. Sofia returns home and Celie has her working in the store. Nettie finally returns to America, and she, Samuel, Olivia, Adam, and Tashi arrive at Celie’s house and the sisters are very happy to see each other. The whole family is together on the Fourth of July and Celie feels content with her life.

#2 - I thought that The Color Purple was an interesting book. I've read other books that were like a diary, but nothing like this before. The author did a very well job of making it believable that an uneducated person wrote this. Some of my favorite parts were the few moments when nice things were happening for Celie. Her whole life felt like a nightmare. I would recommend this book, and I already have. It would be a good book to maybe use bits and pieces from in a history class because of the era it was set in. It graphically described the real struggles of a colored black woman in those days.

Blog Assignment #4

I would rename The Color Purple  something along the lines of Celie's Story.

        Dear Abby,
I have this friend who was raped by her father as she was growing up. She bore two children and wasn't allowed to keep either of them. She was then given away and made to marry a man who didn't love her and forced to raise his children. Her life is in shambles and I just want her to be happy and not have to hurt anymore. What can I do for her?
                  - Shug

      Dear Shug,
I am sorry about what happened to your friend. No one really can expect things to happen. Your friend sounds like a very strong woman for withstanding all the torment over the years. I am assuming that life wasn't as bad once she was forced to marry that man. It must've been tough for her having to raise children who weren't hers, when she wasn't allowed to raise her own. All I can tell you is to be a good friend. Let her know she is loved and appreciated.  Try and get her nice things. Maybe even help her run away and start a new life where she can be in charge.
              - Abby

Blog Assignment #3

We should discuss the relationship between Celie and Shug. We should also discuss how Sofia is.

I want to discuss Sofia because she's living the hard life in jail.

Starting on page 119, I find that there is foreshadowing. Celie talks about how Shug and Mr.____ are starting to become friendlier. This makes me think that they're going to start "getting together". And probably after the fun times are over, Shug and Mr.____ will have a fall out again. Either because they fight or people will think badly of them and it will bother Mr._____.

Blog Assignment #2

Page: 70;  "Harpo say, and the polices don't know....." "....everything with Swain." To me this passage really made me think about what happened to Harpo's wife and children. Harpo says that they aren't coming back. This made me think that either she left to live somewhere else, or maybe Harpo did something to them.

Page 88-89; "They put Sofia to work..." "Tell Odessa I think about her." This passage made me feel so sorry for Sofia. She was living in horrible conditions in prison. And to think of how long she is going to have to be there is sad. She is working hard and being a very good prisoner so hopefully she can get out early on good behavior.
